One of the things I find a real chore with old school projects, is the basing. I've disciplined myself to spend a few days slapping wall filler onto MDF bases so I can then crack on with the fun part of painting.
Here we have the Riders of Rohan almost finished. A mix of Hinchliffe and Heritage figures. To make the whole process bearable, I'm listening to The Lord of the Rings read by Rob Inglis....
You have made a great start there. That is one heck of a force. I am looking forward to seeing them painted and in action.
ReplyDeleteWell hopefully I'll have them finished soon. I really want to get this project completed and not tail off...
DeleteThat's a LOT of cavalry !!!
ReplyDeleteAccording to the army lists given in the article there should be 55 Rohirrim (1 figure representing 100 men). I always thought there were 6000 riders at the actual battle of Pelennor Fields and 5500 at the Rohirrim muster, so I did the extra 5.
DeleteDoes this make you a base fellow? :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun project and such a lot of cavalry too. I do like your aesthetic with this, very creative indeed.
I was musing about doing something similar by adding appropriate Minifigs to my Mythical Earth collection but I fear many ancient / dark age figures have been remodelled. Might look at EBay for contemporaneous figures to my Mythical Earth. Look what trouble you have got me into...
It does indeed. I'm following Joe Dever's aesthetic as I have some of his figures, and its a nice basic style. Some shading and textured bases, but no other frills. There are a couple of sellers who often have old Minifigs (Nowisyourtimemaitland is one), but to be honest, the current (late 1970s) sculpts fit in pretty well, or use Warrior miniatures. Swordinthesprue Middle earth force has a real mix including Irregular and they look great. Minifigs ME prices have rocketed during Covid.... I mentioned in a comment last time that I saw 4 eagles sell for £113 !!!! bonkers (I have about 12 so am sitting on a nice nest egg :))
DeleteForgot to say I really like Rob Inglis readings of the Hobbit and LOTR and I listen to them a great deal. I saw his one man show of the Hobbit in my twenties or slightly earlier and he was terrific almost spellbinding. I felt I got the sense of what it would have been to listen to a bard in an ancient mead hall!
ReplyDeleteP.s tell us a little more of your figure choices.
Yes, Rob Inglis sounds just how I imagined JRRT to sound... lovely rich voice and a benevolent uncle feel! 20 of the riders above I had already, Heritage figures based on the cartoon film and I really love them. They are back in production from Classic Minis but the riders are about £6 each plus postage from the US.... and import tax on top. Joe recommends an Essex figure which is out of production so I went for Hinchliffe... still in production, cheap , very popular in the early mid 80s and lovely animated sculpts but with a very old fashioned feel. I used Gothic and Sarmatian cavalry, added some shields and as soon as my new dremel arrives I'm going to add a few more plumes.
ReplyDeleteWow - they are going to be an impressive sight once you've got over this first hurdle! I used to always base my minis once I'd finished painting them so I'd only end up having small batches to do at a time. However, the advice to prime and base my OWAC army up before the challenge started has been a revelation - such a nice feeling to pick up a unit that's ready primed and just crack on with the painting! It was a real bind though and December wasn't much fun so I feel your pain - reaping the rewards now though!
ReplyDeleteIt was seeing your primed Chaos army that made me realise how sensible it was to base before painting... just paint 'n' go.
