DEMONS AS BLACK AS PITCH - RESTORING JOE DEVER'S COLLECTION 1

I've been repairing some of the regiments in Joe Dever's collection, either doing repairs or replacing rotting or missing miniatures.

These sinister demons sculpted by Barry Minot were missing a few wings. As they are fairly unusual figures, I didn't think I'd be able to find replacements, but happily a seller on Old School Miniatures Facebook group listed some recently so I snapped them up ( one of the many advantages of liking bizarre and eclectic niche figures is there are few people to compete against).

Below are the wing donors as they arrived. A more detailed paintjob perhaps, but gloss Humbrol black makes the demons look particularly creepy.

Another strange miniature in the collection is this disturbing chap.

A Minifigs sci fi figure, but definitely the stuff of nightmares.

You may notice a Peco railway backdrop here. I recently bought a few of the more rural scenes to use with my old school figures.

  1. They all look great, the creepy guy in the pointy hat has such an effective paintjob.

    1. Sometimes less is more... Joe Dever definitely painted for speed, so while his painting may not win any prizes, it's easy to replicate.

  2. Superb work - and also from a sci fi setting, I'm seeing 'Aliens' ... 'there's movement all around us man!'.

Also - the blogpost title must surely be a Venom song from 1981. If not, it bloody well should be.

    1. I watched some sci-fi film with Vin Diesel about flying things that can only come out in the dark.... the completely black finish is quite effective.

  3. Sinister indeed! And I prefer the black... well, prefer is the wrong word, the black is more genuinely horror-like to me.

I would love to see some of the Barry Minot stuff back in production.

    2. Wow, thanks for the info! Although it was the Thane Tostig ones I was thinking of (would love to play that), the fact that I could get some of those Pendragon ones now is amazing news

Actually, I have three of those strange orcs. Pondering bringing that up to a full unit now...

    3. I've got quite a few sprites from the TT range, but am missing some personalities.

    1. If I'd painted them I might have tried to add some shading, but flat black makes them more devilish.
