LEPRECHAUNS FINISHED

A test game of The Woods yesterday, spurred me on to rise with the lark this morning and finish my Leprechaun clan... The Bommy Knockers. Emerging from the bogs and raths of Talamhlar to work their mischief.

Left to right, Oakbound, Pendragon, Reaper, Citadel.

Citadel conversion by Geoff Solomon-Sims, Citadel, Citadel with 54mm tricorn.

Plastic DnD dire owl.

The entire clan.

I was dabbling with painting effects here using a base coat of khaki and highlights of bone and white, then applying contrast paints over the top with a bit of extra shading from Citadel Shades. I think I achieved the effect I wanted, trying to make them look something like Brian Froud's illustrations in Faeries, but a bit more sinister.

The whole process was a bit time consuming, but I really do like Contrast paints... Such a pleasure to apply. I'll be using them in the future on more fantasy figures.

  1. I think that you have achieved the desired effect - they look very faerie indeed. Nice work. I will have to look into getting some of those contrast paints to experiment on some of my miniatures.

    1. The paints are a lovely consistency but dry very quickly so you have to be quick.

  2. Looking fine! The hair effect is very erm effective! I also think I recognise the gnome assassin suitably converted there - one of my all time favourite Citadel figures. I'm still yet to have a game of The Woods. You going to The Woods in The Woods?

    1. The hairy grass is cut up doormat. I got a sample section on eBay for a quid a while back. Yes, I love the dark creeper/gnome assasin, and all the figures based on Russ Nicholson art. I gave Geoff a spare yesterday and am hoping he'll do a homage sculpt! Planning to be at TWITW in 2 weeks, are you travelling down?

    2. Hopefully yes, I have stuff I need to do south so this would make it a bit less of a chore. All about timing though.

  3. Very nice. The mix of miniatures works really well and gives the warband loads of character

  4. A nice mix of old school manufacturers.... there were some great figures produced then.

  5. Superb stuff! The variety of figures unified by theme and colour works tremendously well. Great to see that old gnoll/great goblin shaman: one of the best Citadel miniatures ever in my book.

  7. A great little collection. They remind me of how I imagined the Firvlag from The Many Coloured Land (I need to read that series again one day).

  9. Great work there. I agree re the mix . It adds to the unit very much indeed. I will be really interested to hear how their gaming goes in the forthcoming event.

    1. Thanks. I really do like trying out different styles but never seem to stick with one for any length of time apart from the usual glossy look. I really like the Turnip 28 style which is very forgiving to the painter with dimming peepers. Loads of mud and grot.

  11. I remember a big format kids' book from primary school about a giant and his bommy knocker...

    1. I must admit I thought it was an Irish expression I first heard from Emma's side of the family, but apparently it's relatively common all over. Somewhat ironic for these chaps as this a fair amount of fleeing and sneaking.

    2. I meant they spend a fair amount of time fleeing and sneaking!
