BEHOLD...... CHEESEGRAVE!

My oldest son has been seduced big time by Frostgrave...we haven't played a game yet (my fault) but he has constructed an entire board of ruined buildings off his own bat, both scratchbuilt and purchased. I'll be posting a picture of these soon, but in the meantime let me introduce my warband.

Professor Grunkasse we have met BEFORE, he of the lunar head. The Professor is an elementalist, but an elementalist with a difference. He believes there is a fifth element as yet proven to be one of the essential components of the world....... CHEESE! In his lighthouse on the east coast of Gonchovia, the Prof. has been labouring to find a source of the rarest cheese in the world.... Greencheese , or Mooncheese. It is known that the moon is made of this rare substance and he believes that if he can find a supply on terra firma he will be able to prove his theories and become the first and greatest cheesomancer the world has seen. Legends whisper of  a lost city that lies in a hidden valley somewhere in the not noticed mountains between the lands of the Pewter Moon dwarves and those of the Wild Woods of the Owl Elves. The city of Grasslichauch was famed for it's fromagers who it is believed had a way of duplicating the subtle textures of Mooncheese. Professor Grunkasse believes that somewhere in the city he will find a supply and so set himself on the path to cheese glory.
The Prof. usually allies with the Pewter Moon dwarves, but they are reluctant to enter the city of Grasslichauch which they believe to be under the thrall of the Crimson King. So he has assembled a band of followers, all eager for a slice of cheese. You may notice that all items that are usually metal are in fact fashioned from hardened green cheese. This avoids metallurgic reactions with any of the Professors spells.

Here is Grunkasse again, with his apprentice Rennet. Rennet is eager to learn the mysteries of Elementalism and carries a hefty cheeseknife at all times.

The Earl of Jarlsburg on the right (templar) and his brother Balaton (barbarian).

the shifty brothers Cam and Bert (thug and thief)

Boursin, the trusty crossbowman

and the treasure tokens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of lovely cheese for the adventurers to find among the ruins.

unless others get there first. Son 1  is assembling a rattish warband, perhaps based on the rats in The Box of Delights.

One of my signatures, I often have a random hand sticking out of the ground.

More cheeses!.

The figures are Citadel and Asgard, and the cheeses from a dolls house supplier on ebay.

  2. Wow - I tip my hat at your excellent punnery sir - not to mention the painting, conversions and model selection!

I think Rennet, the apprentice tickled me most - brought back memories of taking our Y5 to see cheese being made at the Wensleydale Creamery.

There is one unforgivable omission though - where is the warhound, Grummit?

I must give this Frostgrave thing a try sometime although Cheesegrave sounds far more fun. though

    1. As usual it's the fluff and figures I like, more than the game itself. I think Frostgrave fills a gap for would be D and D players who have no time (like me). Any more cheese related japes would be most welcome.

    2. Challenge accepted!

      Lester the Red?
How about a Gorgon as the big baddy - called Zola of course ;)
Pastor Isiah - stretching it a bit here - I'll get my coat!

How about the beautiful, if slightly thick, Princess Primula?

    1. Thanks Duc. Citadel went though a phase of having moons on everything in the mid 80's, which I rather liked, so bought a number of them which had been sitting untroubled in a box for 30 years.

  4. Interestingly I played my first game of Frostgrave yesterday with a friend and was hooked. It is such fun.
I looking forward to seeing you son's ruins and hope he likes the game as much as I did.
The cheesy chaps are fantastic ( Not to mention the treasure-I wish I'd thought of that) as are the names and background. If only there was a stinking bishop...

    1. I'll hopefully lay out the table soon.... he has done a great job on it and I am looking forward to seeing his Skaven warband. Good idea about the Stinking Bishop (Grausslichauch is the words Terrible Whiff in pidgin German).

    2. Hi
No problem. Real life always takes precedence. I have only managed to read the blog so much as I am working..
My only wee request is can we have more posts on fantasy art and music?

    3. For me , prog rock, crazy fantasy art, and playing with fantasy soldiers are inextricably linked, so I will try and get more of all of these things up on the blog!

  9. Hello again.
I was an Indie kid when younger so the soundtrack to early games was more Echo and the bunnymen than prog rock.
Saying that have bought and very much enjoyed the Tarot album so am willing to be educated.
Can you point me in the direction of another albun that would give me a gentle introduction?

    1. Hi Major Mike... I would say go for the new Tarot album Reflections. A bit less raw than the Warriors Spell. Also for genuine cosmic 70's vibes try.... Wishbone Ash Argus (possibly the best album ever), and Camel Moonmadness. For really whacky sounds Yes Fragile and King Crimson At the Court of the Crimson King.

  10. Hello again
Have bought Argus and it provided a suitable background while painting some Cimmerians.
Will pick up that Tarot album this week.
    Regards.

    1. Great... it's a cracker, and so reminds me of being a young 'un looking at Roger Dean pics in my brothers bedroom. Tarot Reflections is rapidly becoming one of my favourite albums too. Also try Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules for some good fantasy vibes, and of course the Conan soundtrack by Basil Poledouris is a must for painting Cimmerians.
