THE PILTDOWN IRREGULARS

I don't use drybrushing much, but looking at a few blogs of painters who do, I decided to give it a go on this mix of cavemen and barbarians that form the front line in the picture of the Joe Dever battle I am rebuilding.

It was certainly very quick, and although I'm not elated with the overall result it will do. I've since tried out a quick method of paining muscled flesh using washes which I'm very pleased with, but I guess the drybrushing gives these hairy chaps an old school not quite human look. They are a real mix of figures (as in the original picture I am re-creating). Citadel cavemen, vikings and beserkers, Minifigs cavemen, Ral Partha hillmen, Asgard cavemen, even a Barry Minot figure (did you know he made the top of the Egyptian staff in Raiders of the Lost Ark?). One of the cavemen has a pet wolf from the Ral Partha WWW range...again in the original picture.

They are under the watchful eye of their god, Uncle Magnon...... a pebble I picked up off the beach in Lynmouth North Devon a couple of weeks ago.

Uncle Magnon.

  1. A diverse and charming unit,if one can say that about such chaps. I think the painting has worked very well. They certainly look the part. I like Uncle Magnon but wonder if a model crow alighted on him would be a nice touch.

  2. The flesh has come up nicely indeed and they're looking pretty good after their drybrushing. I recognise a few of those ugly mugs in the throng too! I wonder if Uncle Magnon would stand a darker wash and light drybrush too? Strangely rocks sometimes seem to look more realistic after you've painted them than they do in their natural splendour!

    1. Hey Gareth

great to hear from you. Once again, you seem to have come up trumps with the music suggestion....... I'll be trying to get the cd as soon as I can, completely otherwordly (with a hint of Mike Oldfield in there?). I can't stop listening to Tarot, so thanks for that mate.
      cheers
      Mike

    2. Pleased you like it! Shades of Poledouris too I think. Heavily inspired by Lord Dunsany and Lovecraft, apparently. I don't wish to bombard you, but this might also tickle your fancy: https://lordwind.bandcamp.com/album/ales-stenar

    3. I recognised the Lovecraftian names (I did try reading Gods of Pegana by Dunsany, but it was a bit turgid). Lordwind excellent, I really must start this streaming lark, rather than buying CD'S. Feel free to suggest anything else I might like....

    4. I'm really enjoying Fief at the moment (in the same vein as Trogool, but more medieval): https://fief.bandcamp.com/

You'll pleased to hear that I have just ordered some Denizen Legion of the Damned, as well as a Ral Partha Storm Giant and some adventurers. Also just stripped some C01 Chaos Fighters. Something's afoot!

    5. Arrrrghhh, more tempting sounds. I am so tempted to buy the Trogool CD but it works out about twenty quid to get it posted here as well. Denizen figures are very nice (quite small), so I look forward to seeing your brushwork on them. The RP storm giant is a cracker too.

  4. I like those. I also like your Oriental looking Hobgoblin's. So much so that I am building a Hobgoblin Ronin force. Searching the net for the Ally Morrison figs and totally regret flogging the one I had off.

    1. I did have a couple of those AM hobgoblins once.... and I like the high elves he did at the same time in Russian garb.
