TEST FIGURE - SIR CORINEUS

I managed to bang out a test figure in a Grubdark style... I am finding I can only paint an hour at a time before my eyes start to ache.

He was great fun to paint as I had no  aim or expectations. He is clearly heavily influenced by GARDENS OF HECATE  , a blog I very much admire. It's Grimdark but without being completely gross.

The shield heraldry is based in the Arms of Totnes, where Brutus and his companions allegedly landed in Albion.

  1. Lovely job but if your eyes are aching then uou need something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magnifier-Illuminated-Magnifying-Detachable-Eyeglasses/dp/B07HBW7Y61/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=Magnifier+Eyeglasses&qid=1623756884&sr=8-11

    1. Hi Phil. I already wear glasses and an optivisor. It seems to vary as to the time of day. First thing is ok and when there is ample daylight, but artificial light is no good.

    2. Failing eyesight is why I love the contrast paint. Just get the paint in the vicinity of where you want it and it seems to work out.

    3. It is lovely to use, and I put some on the base of this chap. Mainly Citadel washes involved on the rest of the figure.

  2. Very effective figure and I do like his shield. The painting style looks great on him and I know what you mean re Gardens of H . I look forward to seeing more...

    1. Thanks. I was very pleased how he turned out, other than it does look like a direct copy ( without the skill) of Ana's work. Sincerest form.of flattery I suppose.

  3. Great painting; especially the shield.

I concur with you on the eye-sight thing - it is a real pain when you want to paint but cannot focus correctly due to only having the use of artificial light. Despite this, you have done a fantastic job.

    1. More by luck than skill! Middle age doesn't come alone

  4. Lovely paint job and that shield really pops. Very different from cheerfully bright old school.
Was the whole turnip grimy 28 not based on some Russian science fiction film?

    1. I needed a change from shiny. I'm not sure about the origins of Turnip28... Just that I like the idea.

  5. Nice to see a grimy look without the overboard look of many of the Nurgle figure s

    1. One of the reasons I like Weald28 and Gardens of Hecate is the fantasy is very muted. It's not the overblown pumped up Warhammer style which does grate with me a bit.

  6. Superb job! I'm a big fan of The Gardens on Hecate as well and would love to do a similar project at some point - very inspiring! You've nailed that muted, desaturated look - love it!

    1. Washed out and desaturated... That I see every morning in the mirror. Yes, I've got a woodland setting in mind, rather than the dry stony city that seems to be the GOH world. Endless forest with clearings here and there for settlements.

    2. Ha - yeah, sounds familiar! XD

You'll be looking forward to the impending release of the Verrotwood rules as much as me by the sounds of things! Sounds like a great mash up with Turnip 28.

    3. Yes indeed..I was mightily taken with that idea... And then I discovered Weald28. Any use of the word Weald gets my support. I've never been that good at converting figures, but some of the very basic kit bashes and frankly daubed painting I've seen on Instagram are very inspiring and make me feel any skill level is welcome. That and all the mud and grime.
