SLEEPY FLOYD'S CAERULEAN GURNERS

Here we have a unit of Prince August orcs. I had this mould back in the early 80's and a few of these figures were cast way back then. The rest have been done recently, and I have to say I loved the process and have since bought loads more moulds, historical as well as fantasy. The figures are very small, almost 20mm, but they suffice as runtish goblins.

For a change I used a white undercoat and no shading, just thin paint to let the undercoat show through. Very quick, and I might use it again for any more home cast figures.

Sleepy Floyd is an Archive late 70's orc....... the Brother Hildebrandt set the trend for long faced reptilian looking orcs, I'm not sure I like the idea, but this figure is quite fun.

  1. I've always liked the idea of casting my own minis. Must feel very satisfying. Your output truly puts mine to shame - I must start painting!

    1. Most satisfying, just time consuming. Your figure went in the post today Gareth, so you should get it on the morrow. Check out the blogs of my latest follower Joe McClaren..... shiny shiny shiny in a wonderfully neat, toy soldier in a cabinet way. They are fantastic. BTW, when you have a mo, could you burn me a copy of the Trogool album? It would just cost too much to get a copy sent from the States, and frankly I don't have a clue how to stream, store and produce as a hard copy. Cheers

    2. No problem! Give me a week as I'll have to get some blank discs (I need to get some anyway) and I'll get it to you. My new blog is about to go up soon - just need to finish off the first miniature (this chap: http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/File:C02-41.jpg).

    3. Thanks a lot..... and the other one you suggested as well if poss?! New blog sounds very interesting, that's a great mini. Citadel did him with arms outstretched as well I think.

Was the other one Lord Wind? (Inspired by the 'Conan the Barbarian' ost). Just been diagnosed with a groin hernia - ouch. It actually means all these things can be achieved more quickly, though!

  3. Lovely stuff! I've quite a few of these in the 'to paint' queue, but mine were cast in the dim and distant past by their previous owner, with more enthusiasm than skill, and they lack the fine detail of yours. I'm considering picking up a few of their moulds and giving the casting a go myself.

    1. One of the reasons I like them is the detail is not too defined. I've been dabbling with gloss varnishes recently, and have come to the conclusion they work best on figures like these and Minifigs with flatter smoother surfaces. These are sprayed with Windsor and Newton High Gloss, but on my big toy soldiers I've been using Yacht varnish. A happy medium is Humbrol Gloss Cote which I believe you use...quick drying, and a nice shiny finish.

  4. Hi Mike. Replying to your comment on Fimm McCool's. I'd be very happy to help out. Have you tried going via Oakbound.co.uk? I've not received an email from you through the site that I can see. Otherwise you can reach me at g_f_sims@yahoo.co.uk
