GILDER GOBLINS

Here are some Hinchliffe goblins I painted last year, using a white undercoat as an experiment. I like the sculpted faces on these figures as they look really mean and sneaky, and they have an old school Hobbit vibe so the Red Eye was pushed into service again although I may change this in the future. Peter Gilder was a giant in the wargaming world when I started gaming in the late 70s, but I've only recently started appreciating his sculpting.

I'm working with Ian Hinds who now owns Hinchliffe Models to get the Fantasy range back into production. Ian had already made a lot of new moulds, and I have sent him some more masters to increase the range, including these chaps. Watch this space (if you are interested).

    1. Thanks.. I can't bring myself to paint goblins green, but any other colour will do.

  2. I didn't realize that Peter Gilder was involved in sculpting these. I didn't own any Hinchliffe as the (then) local hobby shop only carried Minifigs. I would definitely be interested in purchasing a few if they reappeared. Nice pics by the way.

    1. I think he did as some of the humans have his trademark overlong arms. I'm not sure his heart was in the fantasy range, but there are some great models. A lot of them appear to be copied from existing ranges of other Maufacturers such as Heritage.

  3. Now those are proper goblins. Sneaky, mean, nasty looking little sh*@s, not these modern 'cute' efforts. Nice job with the painting, you have done a great job brining the sculpted character out.

    1. Thanks Sprinks...I do like a gloss varnish, bit it does interfere with any washes or shading... luckily they are characterful figures. I think the 2 fangs and red dot eyes make them look nasty, a bit like the Bakshi Lord of the Rings orcs.

  4. Very effective goblins who look like they certainly mean business. I didn’t know about the Hinchcliffe fantasy figures, I will be interested in hearing more. Shield logo looks just the ticket. These are small and nasty looking, just what you would want from goblins!

  5. It's a mixed range that I suspect Peter Gilder was asked to do by Frank Hinchliffe. I think it came out about 1980-81 by which time there were "better" sculpts already on the market so this one missed the boat a bit. It contains the classic tropes, the "guards" look like Gondorians with winged helmets (or upturned buckets which is whaat they look like), centaurs, skeletons mustachioed adventuring heroes with comb overs (that look like Gilder himself). All good fun.

  7. Lovely work - I painted a set a couple of years back, they're really sneakily evil!

I've found the wolf and the ranger with bow btw and also picked up the last of the Sci Fi range that was the continuation of the FA series - they really don't seem to be Peter Gilder sculpts.

    2. Would love to see the miniatures you bought from Joe Dever's estate so if you get the time please do upload. Also do you know where to find other good images of his collection? 'Project Aon' has some good ones under 'Lone Wolf Battle Day Photos'. Have you seen them?
Did, say, Mantikore or Mongoose have some photos of his collection on their sites at any point when they when they were publishing the books?
